Ralph Meyer was taken by his son back to Iwo Jima on the 60th Anniversary of the Battle there.  These are photos of that trip.  Ralph looks great and like he could still suit up.  My generation owes a tremendous debt to the young men who fought and died in WWII, and we can never  thank them and all the veterans thereafter enough. It is sad that the heroes of "the war to end all wars" were followed by more heroes in Korea, Vietnam,  Persian Gulf War, Afghanistan and now Iraq.  Thank You all again.

Hi all, Last weekend Debbie Orosco and her fiancé Jack Fighter (retired Captain from Skokie Fire) were down here with Debbie's mother to see a bunch of shows in Branson. We were able to have them over for brunch and took the attached photo. Debbie will be leaving Skokie on Feb 1st and getting married to Jack in Las Vegas on Valentine's Day. Then she will relocate to Phoenix with Jack. They both looked good and very very happy and it was nice to visit with them. Al & Nina

Skokie's "Skyscraper"... I got to spend an entire night up there guarding the Secret Service's radio transmitters (Like I was really needed) while President Ford was in town.  Sgt. Phil O'Keefe and others got to see the secret service in action that day when he told a protester, repeatedly, to take his hands out of his pockets.  Before the guy got "you pig" out of his mouth following the usual verb before, 2 agents had him on the ground and cuffed, a third produced an "Uzi" from a briefcase, and it was all over. As the commercial goes, "These guys are good!"
Probably the last days of Duffy's Tavern.
More of the Fun Fair, circa 1967
Oakton Pool
These photos sent along by Tony Scarpelli.  As a teen I spent many hours at the Fun Fair.  They had a driving range there too, and a "Wild Mouse" roller coaster.  It was at Golf & Skokie where they built the Hilton, now Doubletree. This is circa '62. Vehicles are '56 Olds,'61 or '62 Olds,'56 Chev, and '57 Ford.
I believe this is the Emerson St. or Church St. Bridge over the canal.  My paternal grandfather was an engineer on the construction project.  This photo taken 4 years before my Dad was born.

(Grampa disappeared around 1917 and was never heard from again, good riddance.)
This one is a surprise to me. I knew the Swift Station was part of the old North Shore Electric line, but never knew it was a commuter station before the CTA took over.
Interesting view taken from St. Pete's belfry apparently, in '94.

Please Note The High Tech Equipment We Had!
If anyone has seen the new squads with video displays, lap tops and cell phones etc., we were really backward.  The photo of the Dodge Reliant, K Car, 4 cyl squad, is a perfect example of an experiment gone wrong!
